Unlocking Global Learning Opportunities: NSYSU IBBA Hosts Overseas Exchange and Dual Degree Sharing Session "Plan ahead for application timelines, carefully compare course structures, and get your visa documents ready well in advance." These practical and crucial reminders were shared by students from the International Business Bachelor Program (IBBA) at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU). At an online sharing session held on the evening of October 30, two students who recently returned from studying in the United States and Germany shared their personal experiences and practical advice to help younger peers navigate overseas studies and international living. The speakers were Sheena Huang (Class of 2026), who is pursuing a 3+2 dual degree at Temple University in the U.S., and Nina Hu (Class of 2027), who completed an exchange semester at the University of Mannheim in Germany. They covered everything from application requirements and course selection to visa procedures and local life. Dual Degree (3+2): Temple University Application Guide, Internships, and Student Life Sheena Huang, currently pursuing a Master of Science in Business Analytics at Temple University's Fox School of Business, explained the application details and advantages of the 3+2 dual-degree program. During her time in the U.S., Huang served as Vice President of the Temple University Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) and worked as a Global Communication Intern, gaining valuable leadership and practical experience. She noted that the 3+2 program allows students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree within five years, offering high time efficiency. Compared to traditional master's pathways, it also provides a wide range of specialized master's options—such as Actuarial Science, Business Analytics, Data Science, and Management—without restricting students to a single track. Huang outlined key application steps and timelines: Application Documents & Tests: Applicants need to submit language scores (IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 79), two recommendation letters, a resume, a future plan, and official transcripts. Students with lower business school GPAs may need to take the GRE. Additionally, resumes and future plans can be sent to Temple University's Taiwan International Office for review and feedback. Preparation Timeline: Take language tests by December of the preceding year; attend the Temple information session in March; submit applications and interview in September; and receive admission decisions by December. Post-Admission Steps & Course Credit Pre-Approval: Arrange housing and roommates in February while contacting Academic Advisors to plan course schedules. Submit credit pre-approval forms by April. Between May and August, complete the F-1 visa application, pay SEVIS fees, obtain Form I-20, get required vaccinations, and purchase medical insurance before flying to the U.S. in early August. Living Environment & Safety: Huang suggested evaluating city environments and safety statistics, such as crime rates in Philadelphia, to stay mindful of personal safety. She also shared memorable moments from her time in the U.S., including Thanksgiving gatherings, Halloween pumpkin carving, visiting amusement parks, and city sightseeing. Exchange at the University of Mannheim: School Selection, Course Structures, and Visa Procedures Nina Hu, who studied as an exchange student at the University of Mannheim in Germany, focused her talk on school selection strategies, academic course structures, and visa preparation. When selecting a university, Hu advised students to evaluate three key criteria: geographic location (for ease of travel), housing availability, and credit transferability back at NSYSU. Regarding course structures in Europe, she highlighted the differences between short-term and long-term courses: Short-term Courses: Classes are condensed into a few days. While enrollment slots and course selection periods are limited, the learning pace is fast, and completion rates are often high based on her personal experience. Long-term Courses: Classes meet weekly (around 1.5 hours per session) with flexible enrollment options and no capacity limits, though course content tends to be more challenging. Hu also shared administrative insights for studying in Germany: Visa Application & Blocked Account: German visa requirements are strict. Students must open a blocked account (such as Expatrio, requiring around €992 per month) and purchase German health insurance early. She provided her personal visa timeline (uploading documents on May 7, revising files on May 12, booking an appointment on May 13, submitting materials in person on May 19, and receiving her passport on June 3). Daily Life in Germany: Hu described student dormitories and university orientation events. She also prepared students for daily realities in Germany, such as frequent Deutsche Bahn (DB) train delays and Sunday store closures, while recommending budget-friendly experiences like Couchsurfing. Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone for Global Growth The NSYSU IBBA program requires students to complete study abroad experience to foster global mobility and cross-cultural communication skills. Through this sharing session, both speakers demonstrated how to plan application timelines, transfer credits, and manage life abroad, encouraging younger students to clarify their goals early and confidently explore the world.
