Application Questions

Q: When is the IBMBA application deadline?
A: International Admission in NSYSU now begins in January and ends in February every year, however it is subject to change, please visit the website of our Office of International Affairs for information of the year. Applicants will be considered altogether by the admission committee of the College of Management when application period is closed.

Q:If it has already passed the application period, can you make a special case for me and still accept my application?
A:Unfortunately, due to the scarcity of places and to maintain the rule of 'fair play', when the application period has been closed there is no chance of taking additional applicants. You will not be considered for the waiting list either, as all the waiting list places will be allocated to those who have filed their applications before the deadline.

Q: I haven't taken the TOEFL/IELTS yet, can I apply for program?
A: Yes, you can apply for program before taking an English language test. If you are made an offer by the College of Management, it will be made conditional on you receiving an approved language test (TOEFL iBT, IELTS or other equivalents). Applicants from non-English speaking countries must take the English language test, which is required by the admission process, as early as possible. This is because the schedules and places of those tests are limited, and tend to be filled very soon especially towards the beginning of semester in September, and applicants usually find themselves facing the predicament of applying for those exams too late and having no exams to take.

Q: Do I need to submit a GRE/GMAT score?
A: GRE/GMAT score is NOT REQUIRED by the admission process but you can certainly use it as a supporting document if you consider the score favorable.

Q: If I get accepted is it possible to defer my place to the following academic year?
A: Yes, deferring your admission for the following academic year is possible. Please scan the completed application form and email it to ibmba@cm.nsysu.edu.tw. Your application for the deferral will then be considered, and the program office will let you know the result of your request.
Please note that if you have been offered the NSYSU Financial Aids for Foreign Students, this will not automatically be transferred to the following year if your deferral request is approved.

Q: I would like to apply for Teaching Assistant positions. Are they available for GMBA students?
A: Yes, most IBMBA courses offers TA positions and they are decided by course instructors. As the courses are open to both international and local students, proficiency in both English and Mandarin is undoubtedly a plus to be a TA. Please consult and register your interest with the course instructors.

Program related questions

Q: How many hours of class will I have per week?
A: There's no minimum class hour requirement for full-time students at Master's level, and the maximum class time is 15 hours per week consisting of 5 courses of 3 hours. If students wish to take more than 5 courses per week, they need to file their applications to the program office with their previous transcripts for approval.
2.
Q: When should I start to look for an advisor? Can I have Professor X as my advisor?
A: You should start to look for and approach an advisor no later than the end of the second semester within your initial registration. Your advisor is there to advise you on the topic, style, format and contents of your dissertation, so students are encouraged to approach any member of academic staff in NSYSU that aligns with your research interests.

Q: How is my thesis defense committee established and what is it composed of? Should I form my own defense committee?
A: A thesis defense committee is composed of at least three members, including a committee chair and two committee members. Your advisor usually, but not necessarily, is one of your committee members; if your advisor does participate in your oral defense, s/he should not takes the position of the committee chair. There is no written regulations on how a thesis defense committee should be formed, but traditionally in the College, the committee is formed by your advisor who invites appropriate members of academic staff to be the committee chair and member(s).

Q: How does an oral defense proceed? Is there anything I should know prior to the defense?
A: An oral defense can take as short as one hour and as long as more than two hours, depending on the quality of students' presentation on the thesis contents, different styles of committee feedback, and circumstantial factors. Students should, however, prepare a presentation of 15-20 minutes and expect a 20-30 minutes of Q&A from committee members before a grade is given. Before the defense takes place, students should deliver one hard copy of your thesis to each of your committee members, and allow a minimum of one week for them to read and familiarize themselves with your work.

Q:Where can I check course availability?
A: Course schedule is available at: http://selcrs.nsysu.edu.tw/menu1/qrycrsfrm.asp?HIS=1&eng=1&in_eng=2. The website is updated as soon as any changes take place but course availability does change from time to time, so it is always worth checking.

Q: I'm interested in course offered by other colleges. Can I take them?
A: All Departments, institutes and colleges in the University offer a range of courses, which can be taken by any student provided the requirements of both the course and the program students registered with, are met. Courses offered by other colleges will be taken as electives, and you can take up to two of them. If you wish to take more than two outside options, you would need to get the program director's permission.

Q: Can I take courses taught in Mandarin? Will the language course offered by the Chinese Language Center (CLC) count towards my graduation requirements?
A: Yes, you are encouraged to take courses taught in Mandarin if you believe you can handle both the contents and language of the course instruction. Chinese language course offered by CLC will, however, NOT count as part of your degree requirements.

Q: When can I start registering for courses? How do I register for courses?
A: Course registration is done online and they are available at: http://selcrs.nsysu.edu.tw/. You can register for courses during the period shown on the login webpage of course selection system.
The schedule allows you about three weeks to attend whichever courses that you are interested in to make sure you choose the ones that fit your interests as well as course planning. Please note that your course are selected by semester.

Q: How can I apply to be an exchange student to the College of Management?
A: All applications for exchange program are processed by the Office of International Affairs (OIA). Please visit http://www.oia.nsysu.edu.tw/oia_c/en/index.php for details.

Q: If I am not from a partner university to NSYSU, can I still apply?
A: Yes, you are welcome to be an self-sponsored exchange student in NSYSU even if you are not from a partner university.

Academic Questions
1.
Q: How many hours of class will I have per week?
A: In NSYSU the maximum class time for graduate students is 15 hour/week, and 25/week for undergraduate students. Any exchange students taking courses of longer class time will have to apply to the college office and obtain approval before they are allow to do so. NSYSU, however, does not regulate the minimum workload nor the subjects of class for exchange students; exchange students will have to plan their own course schedule and if necessary, in accordance with the regulations by their home universities.

Q: Am I automatically registered for Mandarin course? Can I opt out?
A: Yes, as an exchange student you will be automatically assigned for a mandarin course that usually runs from 12:10 to 14:00 through Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This is because we believe learning the local language is essential to understanding the Taiwanese culture, and will (hopefully) be a rewarding part of your exchange experience in Taiwan. You are therefore encouraged, but not obliged, to participate in the Mandarin language courses. If you decide not to take Mandarin, please inform the Chinese Language Center (CLC) of your decision within the first two weeks after the semester commences.

Q: If I am interested in a regular course that conflicts with the Mandarin course schedule, can I take both Mandarin and the said course?
A: No, unfortunately you cannot. The registrar system will not allow you to sign up for either course.
5.
Q: Can I take courses taught in Mandarin?
A: Yes, you are encouraged to take courses taught in both English or Mandarin if you believe you can handle both the contents and language of the course instruction.

Other Important Questions
1.
Q: The academic calendar of NSYSU runs differently from my home university and consists of more weeks for a semester. Can I shorten my exchange period and fly home for Christmas?
A: All students of NSYSU, including degree and exchange students, must follow NSYSU university regulations including academic schedule. In recognition of the diverse academic systems around the world yet to maintain class order and the rule of "fair play", any students departing early and not finishing the entire semester must provide official certificate issued by their home universities stating the cause for their early return, and to inform and obtain approval from all of their course instructors as soon as possible.

Q: I have applied for on-campus accommodation. Is there anything I should pay attention to regarding housing?
A: please note parking is forbidden in all dormitory area; students will be fined for doing so. If exchange students finish their term and exit NSYSU without paying overdue fine(s), no record of transcripts of their exchange period in NSYSU will be posted to their home university afterwards.

Q: Can you tell me a bit about the College environment?
A: To advance its international efforts and create a friendly environment for international students, the College provides the following several services embedded in its environment to facilitate the international students:
- Center for International Affairs (R4051, 4th floor): first of foremost, the College office is the first contact point for all international students when they encounter a quetion. Staff in the college office include Miss Jenny and Miss Karren, both of whom will endeavour to help with students;
- International Lounge (3rd floor): located at the corner on the third floor, the Interntional Lounge is a semi-open and cozy space where studnets can browse information on partner schools of the College, engage in group discussions, or simply rest in between classes;
- Lost & Found/Computer lab (2nd floor): the Computer lab is situated on the 2nd floor, handling all computer and technical-related problems. The Computer lab also serves as the "Lost & Found" center, where students should consult with if they find themselves missing their belongs;
- Creativity Center (ground floor): Creativity Center is a common area for all students of the College to socialize as well as to study. If students wish to host an event at the Center, please file their application to the College Office;
- English newspaper and magazines: the College subscribes to the China Post and the Economist, both of which are placed in the International Lounge.
