From Students to Factory Design Consultants for a Semester

IB612 “Consulting Methods and Practices” is a business program class offered by the IBMBA program and coordinated by Dr. Wang Chien and Dr. Sung, Chao -Hsien.
This course opened the opportunity for both local and international MBA students to form four consulting groups in order to help real enterprises located around Taiwan to improve and/or solve firm related issues.

The consulting group A.M.U.S ing Inc, for example, comprised of team members Ariana Ohana, Una Shih, Chun Hsiang Hsu and Mariandrea Hernandez, is currently collaborating along with the guidance of two professors with the improvement and the design of a new factory layout for San Tzuoo Corporation.
San Tzuoo Corporation or Sancity Corp. Ltd. is a Taiwanese company with multiple locations around Taiwan that provides electrical lighting products for the use of hazardous and industrial commodities. San Tzuoo headquarters’ and sales office is conveniently located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan with a manufacturing facility in Yunlin. San Tzuoo Corp is also considered Taiwan’s leading manufacturer of explosion proof lights, flame proof devices, fire-fighting equipment, fin tubes and heat exchangers.

San Tzuoo’s CEO Po-Yi Li has requested the services of A.M.U.Sing Inc. to redesign and organize the factory’s layout in order to improve productivity and increase product efficiency.
A.M.U.S ing Inc. is creating a new layout of the factory according to real measurements given by San Tzuoo and quantity of equipment being used with its capacity. The consulting group is using their business knowledge learned in class as well as a 3D program called Autodesk Factory Design Suite to generate the most suitable design for the firm’s factory, which will be delivered in June 2016.

Currently, the project is still in progress, but with the support of San Tzuo Corporation, the consultant team will be visiting the factory for a second time on Friday April 15, 2016 to complement the provided information and to complete the 3D factory design layout. The team will also use this 3D AutoCAD Software to analyze the clashes and space restraints within the new factory. This way, it will minimize the risk of clashes between equipment that have been already installed and new incoming equipment to improve the manufactory work flow. The factory design software will also maximize the production line by finding the most efficient footprint possible for the installation of the assembly line. After the design and analysis has been finalized, the team plans to simulate the installation sequence of the equipment and to simulate the manufacturing operations of San Tzuoo’s main product line.
